How target size works
For each image, Asset Compressor searches for the highest quality that stays under your limit, so you get the best-looking file that still meets the requirement.
Very large photos may not reach tiny targets through quality alone. That is why this tool also limits the width to 1600 px – enough for most forms and screens. Lower it further (for example to 1000 px) for very small targets like 50 KB or 20 KB.
Other common size limits
Change the target to 20 KB, 50 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB (1024 KB) in the settings. JPEG output is used by default because it is accepted by virtually every upload form.
Passport, visa and exam photos
Official portals often combine a file-size limit with required pixel dimensions. Set both: the target size and the exact maximum width and height the portal asks for. Always check the specification of the site you are uploading to.
Frequently asked questions
Why is one of my images still over 100 KB?
Some very detailed or very large images cannot reach the target even at the lowest quality. Lower the maximum width in the settings and apply again.
Can I compress an image to 50 KB or 20 KB?
Yes. Enter any value in the target size field. For very small targets, also reduce the maximum width to around 800–1000 px.
Does this work for passport or exam application photos?
Yes, as long as the required format is JPEG and the only limit is file size. Check the required pixel dimensions too and set them as the maximum width and height.
Is 100 KB the same as 0.1 MB?
Almost: 1 MB is 1024 KB, so 100 KB is about 0.098 MB. Asset Compressor uses 1 KB = 1024 bytes, like most upload forms.
Which format is used?
JPEG by default, because almost every upload form accepts it. You can switch to WebP or AVIF in the settings if the site you are uploading to supports them.
