Why square crops are useful
Square images fit profile pictures, product grids, marketplace listings, album covers and many app icons without any further resizing. A landscape photo loses its left and right edges and a portrait loses its top and bottom, so it matters what stays in the middle. Automatic centering is a good start, and the manual crop covers the cases where the subject is not in the middle.
Check the platform you upload to for its current recommended size, since those requirements change from time to time. Square is a safe shape for most of them, and you can set a maximum width and height to export at exactly the size you need.
How the automatic square works
For each image the tool takes the shorter side as the size of the square and centers it on the longer side. A 4000 × 3000 photo becomes 3000 × 3000, taken from the middle. Nothing is stretched or squashed: the pixels inside the square are kept as they are, and you can scale the result down with the maximum width option.
When you draw a crop by hand on one image, that crop is used for that image instead of the automatic square. The other images keep the centered square.
Square crops for whole folders
Because the shape is applied to every file in the batch, a folder of mixed landscape and portrait product photos turns into a consistent set of squares in one pass. Add a maximum width such as 1200 px to give them all the same pixel size, choose WebP to keep the files small, and download everything as a ZIP.
Everything runs in your browser. Your photos are not uploaded, and the squares are created on your own device.
Frequently asked questions
Is anything stretched or distorted when I crop to a square?
No. The square is cut out of the photo without scaling, so proportions inside the square stay exactly as they were.
Can I choose which part of the photo stays?
Yes. Open the crop editor with the Crop button and move the square. The automatic crop is centered, and your own crop overrides it for that image.
Can I get a different shape such as 4:5 or 16:9?
Yes. In the Crop section of the settings choose another shape, or use the Crop image tool, which offers the same shapes and a free-form box.
What size will the squares have?
The side of each square is the shorter side of its photo. Set a maximum width or height in the resize options to make them all the same size. Images are never enlarged.
